My go-to is always my facebook page, but I know there are still lots of people who don't use FB, or don't have an account....or they may not even follow me there. Either way, I've GOT SOME NEWS!

Well, first some other news before the main news. This is so terrible that I neglected to post this anywhere, but I was in my local paper back in July! It was my first real interview and such a very cool thing. A definite high :)
The next big news it that I'll be taking a step away from Papaver Vert for a while. I don't know for how long and this makes me happy not knowing. I've been hemming and hawing over this for a while. Mainly due to a desire to dedicate time creating new designs, exploring and learning more about felting, and finally, to figure out where I want my business to go. But this always seemed so daunting! What if people forget me? (hilarious, right?) What if I lose all momentum and just end up eating chocolate croissants in front of the computer everyday? (this actually sounds pretty good) What if, shoulda coulda woulda??? Aye, the monkey brain. Well, due to an injured back, my active brain was forced to be silenced for a good month and out of this came some clarity and a solid decision. But before all that I have to admit that the whole month was a definite low for me. I was so worried that the pain I had would never go away, and I think it was that fear that made me have a more compassionate view of taking some time to myself. At this point, I'm not even raring to go to start some new work. I'm enjoying working my part time job and actually taking a real break. There's been some swimming, running and zumba involved. As well as more cooking and reading. Oh and more kitty time:
So starting next Tuesday, 8/13, I'll be closing my Etsy shop for an undetermined amount of time. It won't be a goodbye, just a pause. So please do follow me here or on my facebook page to see what I'm up to as I still plan to post. And it may be more kitty photos. Or ONLY kitty photos. Well, this and another more crass term from the previous post. I just came back from a 4 day felting workshop at New England Felting Supply in Easthampton, Massachusetts. If you had told me a month and a half ago that I'd be on a plane to Massachusetts, I would've called you crazy. I'm thinking some of the women in my class thought this when they first met me ("You came from where??") but when you see a class being offered by someone with mad skills like Lisa Klakulak, you go a-running. And I did!

Lisa's one of the few artists out there (ok, in my opinion) doing things with wool and felting that are truly amazing. She's been studying felting for the past 13 years and has come up with techniques and designs that are so unique. They're just not done by anyone else. So the chance to take her class in Realism in Felted Imagery was something I couldn't pass up. The class alone made for an amazing week, but traveling alone, meeting the coolest people (one gal had a flock of sheep, another rode a huge motorcycle), hanging out in Northampton and exploring a part of the U.S. I'd never been to.... all of this made for one hell of a good time! The class had waaayyyyy more math than I thought was possible, and even she jokingly said that she was glad that she didn't put this in the class description because people may not have signed up! I'm grateful for her crazy formulaic mind, otherwise I wouldn't have a good foundation in which to start my own work. Thanks Lisa!
My goal this year is to work more on my felting technique, honing my craft and spending more time on creating, discovering and seeing where I want to take my felt. I'm the worse at decision making.....I can hem and haw until even I'm so annoyed with myself, but after taking this class, I've decided (saying it out loud helps, right??) I'm going to take a leap this year, curtail my wholesaling and online sales and devote my time to exploration. This is where chasing felt comes in. You may recall, if you read this blog, that I took a felting workshop with Claudy Jongstra in 2010 (in Italy! Oh take me back!) and a 2 day class with Jorie Johnson, both women creating such beautiful work. I'm thinking this is going to have to be the way I get my felting education since there isn't a school or extended workshops that specialize in felt. So I'll be in search of classes this year! And possibly residencies too. I'm pretty excited :)

Papaver Verthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03048033711089010970noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7810766706652477155.post-9022149316895348442013-02-16T11:56:00.000-08:002013-02-16T11:56:15.744-08:00Hello 2013! Going BigOk 2013, I'm keeping this short and sweet.

I usually write up a list of my goals at the beginning of the year (looks like I missed 2012...it was a rough start) but I really don't feel like making a long-winded post about it. My theme for 2013 is "Go Big" or another vulgar one (my fave) "S*** or Get off the Pot". (And oh lord am I cringing at the amount of times I've written about pillow making and hiring help)

Create everyday / aka get my hands dirty / more FELTING (and shut off that computer)

Make a small line of pillows (I just ordered the wool and it's on the way!)

Work with my most fave places to create something exclusively for them

Hire some helping hands (anyone out there interested in a day or 2 a week??)

Look into artist residencies

So that's the gist. Capisce?

And before I go, I've got some new and one-of-a-kind pincushions fresh in the Etsy shop! They're all made from scraps of my hand felted merino wool leftover from projects and pillows from years before. They're all a little wonky, different shaped with fabric backings. You can even have the option of getting your initials stitched on the back. I just love this idea just as much as I love the idea of pincushions being such a personal item in general. I've
met people who have had their pin cushions for a really long time. What about you?
My first ever real show for Papaver Vert was in 2008 at the ACC show at San Francisco's Fort Mason. I was juried into the first ever Alt Craft section with other emerging artists and I swear I was at craft camp. I had so much fun at that show and afterwards, I've never been so tired! It was my first look into how much work can go into having a booth at a show.

Speaking of shows, here are some save-the-dates for some Papaver Vert Holiday Shopping!

Some new necklaces I cooked up a few weeks ago and designs i've been thinking about making for a long time. Combining fabric with felting has been churning in my mind forever.

I've come to realize that it can take me a good 6 months or so of thinking about a design (somewhat passively) and then BOOM! I need to make them NOW. And then, voila, in 2 days. MADE!

I'll be putting these in my Etsy shop tomorrow the 19th! (and a few more on Friday as well)

I just launched my new website last week. I had given myself a deadline (up to right before I got on a plane to Austin to see my new baby nephew) and I accomplished it, but not without a lot of lack of sleep, tons of coffee and just lots of unnecessary stress. Somehow this is how I do things. Set deadlines, throw in some major procrastination, get closer to said deadline, work harder, panic, panic, coffee, coffee, ignore husband for several days and then DONE! I know lots of people who do this, but it always seems like I'm the best at it. And when I say best, I mean the craziest. Not in a good way.

Regardless, my site is up, I really love it and I'm excited to be able to upload my work myself in real time. I had been wanting a gallery-like site and I got it! So go take a peek already. I'll wait here.

In other "things are a -changing" news, I finished working on my fall 2012 line which is something I've never done before (having a seasonal line.) To be honest, I fought this since I started my business. I just thought I didn't need to, that I didn't want to be held down by a season so that I could create willy-nilly whenever I wanted. Well, this year I decided to make some changes. First off I met with Rena Tom, strategist extraordinaire for creative businesses. It was an intense hour of back and forth and it helped me SO much - thanks Rena! She helped me formulate a plan for my business and it really rejuvenated me big time. I came home and got cracking that very day. I feel very grown-up in my little business - new website, new fall line, created my first linesheet to send to stores, edited my current product line and I'm working on a small line for spring 2013. Holy smokes, who am I????

Before all of these changes came about, I had a couple of really rough months. Late last year I had made the decision to take some time off in my business and I think it was a culmination of going through some personal things and being in a rut with Papaver Vert. I didn't write about what was going on here (like I did when my husband and I lost our friend Chris to suicide last year) mainly because I just didn't feel like sharing yet. A few weeks before Christmas, my mom came down with a mysterious illness and was hospitalized for 10 days. I was so freaked out to see my mom that ill that I lived in her hospital room the whole time, not wanting to leave her side. Thank the stars she is doing so much better now but being confronted with the idea of losing my mom was a real rude awakening.

Then, several months later, my husband and I lost his mom to breast cancer. She had been diagnosed several years before, so we knew what was coming, but it was still shocking none-the-less. We were able to be right next to Lynda, in her house, when she died. I feel so lucky to have been there right at that moment.....we didn't know that that would be the day. I mean, how often do you get a chance to witness such a personal moment and say goodbye? My mother-in-law was always so lovely to me and accepted me as her daughter from the moment I met her. It's not often you hear that about a mother-in-law, right? There was a time in my young life when my mom didn't speak to me. I felt like the world had ended but Lynda's house was my refuge and I spent so much time there. I will always be grateful for that and even though I never told her how much it meant to me, I'd like to think she knew. On a side note, Lynda was an avid crafter. A few weeks after she died, I cleared out her craft room, donated a bunch of things while taking home lots and lots of books, yarns and antique notions for myself. She was always giving me bits and pieces from her room so I know she'd be happy that I took lots of good things. Thanks so much Lynda :)

Looking back, I'm pretty sure what got me out of my funk was my work. And by that I mean working with my hands, designing, creating. More so then thinking about my business. And then the business followed. And then the openness to changing. And now here!

Things are a-changing and it's good.

Would it be bragging if I say how much I'm in love with my Bubble Cuffs? Fine then. I can't help it.

As a designer you can't help but love your own work (most of the time) and feel an attachment, and I just have to say that this little lovely is my baby. It just wears so well, feels good on and is more than just a plain ol' bracelet. There's just so much more to love people! I'm hoping you're picking up what I'm putting down.

Hand crocheted with 100%wool, then wet felted, trimmed and steamed. The wool has some stretch to it which makes for a nice fit.

Currently in my Etsy shop in 4 solid colors - mustard, turquoise, leaf green and bright blue. And one duo in turquoise and grey.

And soon to be on their way to Rare Device in San Francisco!

I haven't mentioned this on my blog yet, but I'm part of a really really lovely group of business women that meet monthly in my hood. We're quite diverse - from clothing designers, to a photographer, a vinyasa yoga instructor and a gal who sings the blues - and I love it. It's always been my goal to meet up often with other small business owners for support, advice and camaraderie and I feel lucky to have found it with my Lucky Ladies.

We're having a little party this Saturday to introduce ourselves and, basically, to have an excuse to showcase our talents amongst some wine, food, music and fun events! Did I mention the raffle yet? Oh my.....the raffle! There will be 2 raffle times where some lucky winners will win some super cool Lucky Ladies swag. You wouldn't want to miss that now, would you??

Check out our site for more info about the event and about us.

And you can find us on facebook too...where it looks like I'm the ringleader....standing in the front. But honestly, i'm not. Gwen pushed me out there!
I even forgot to post about the sale I'm having in my Etsy shop right here. How terrible, right??? My blog may never forgive me for this one.

But I digress.

It's a SALE ladies and gentlemen!!! You'll find last-of-a-kind items in my shop, up to 30% off, that I'll leave in my shop for about a week or so.

I'm sad to see some things go, like my Dot Vase and Tray/Bowl set, but sometimes it's just time to say goodbye to a design.
As y'all know, most of my work is made to order....which I know can be a bit of a bummer come holiday time and you're doing some late in the game shopping.

But WAIT! I've updated my Etsy shop with items that I have in stock and are ready to ship! Very exciting and something I've never done. So please do stop by and see what goodies I've got standing by :)

I plan to add some more items this Friday evening as well...so stay tuned. Also, if you don't already, follow me on facebook where I tend to be a little more active than this poor little blog!

Hoping everyone's had a chance to enjoy the holiday season so far (the airs getting pretty crisp here in the bay area) with some eggnog, a warm fire and a good movie (Elf anyone?) :)

Papaver Verthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03048033711089010970noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7810766706652477155.post-50952588029998663892011-09-28T17:02:00.000-07:002011-09-28T17:02:59.981-07:00Just For Fun....My dear friend's little girl turned 1 a few weeks ago and I knew I wanted to make her something. Usually at this age, they're more interested in the box the toy came in instead of the toy inside so I tried to channel my inner child and, luckily, my toy was a hit.
That sentence sums up my last trip to a tee. Like the one cab ride I took in Rome, my 2 weeks in Italy were exhilarating, thrilling (no seat belt in that taxi) and empowering. While I hung on for dear life as my driver whipped me around the narrow alleyways of that old city, the old Patty would have been praying, "Dear Lord, let me live to eat one more gelato", but the Patty in Rome was giddy, laughing the whole way and raring for more!

I've been back for over a month now and have been working on keeping the same feelings with me in my everyday life....personally and in my work. I figure it doesn't have to go away just because I'm not surrounded by the freedoms of travel, a wonderfully old and crumbling city or yummy pasta. I can be more go-with-the-flow, more accepting of what is and not focusing on what isn't. I can be more independent and not let my brain gremlins get the best of me when encountering new situations and new people. All of these things were already there, but for some reason I needed to go to Italy to figure that out! Not that I'm complaining of course.

What can I figure out on my next trip?

Here are some of my favorite photos I took in Italy:

I don't have any formal training when it comes to felting. It's been good ol' hard work, experimentation, lots of books and the internet. There are times when I lament not having a past with wool....not having years and years of technique down. But when I think about how I actually feel when i'm felting, that it's never boring and there's always sometime new around the corner I've yet to find, I realize that I don't need this background. BUT i've always wanted a teacher. Someone to inspire me, give me honest feedback and to expand my horizons. And that's where Claudy showed up! I took a felting workshop in Italy with Dutch artist Claudy Jongstra back in June and it was just heavenly.

The olive oil farm where I stayed.

From the location (I stayed on an olive oil farm in the hills of Umbria), the class itself (Claudy was so awesome!) to the FOOD.....it was such an experience. And speaking of food. Ohhhhh, the food! Rita, who owns the place where I stayed and grows/makes her own olive oil, cooked for us every night and man were we spoiled! Handmade ravioli, rabbit one night, quiches and homemade desserts. I could go on, but I can see that you're drooling.

The workshop was held amongst the trees of a peaceful retreat in the Umbrian hills. We were given a huge amount of beautiful wool to work with - from hand dyed wensleydale to a whole fleece from one of Claudy's sheep in the Netherlands called Drenth Heath. I had never worked with a raw fleece before and this alone set the whole tone of the class - to work with the wool, allowing for experimentation and to not pay so much attention to technique. This was definitely a challenge for me! I do like to experiment but I'm one that can stick too much to the rules at times, reading and re-reading all about felting techniques. It was funny because Claudy came by me more than once to say "Let it go now" and "You're done! Stop felting!" Thankfully she was such a kind person so her admonishments came with a grin and a laugh. It was inspiring and frustrating all at the same time. By the end of the week I focused a little more on the wool spinning and weaving (which we learned in the class) and less on the felting and didn't let myself feel too guilty about it.

Overall, the class was more than just a class for me. There were several "firsts". My first time traveling by myself and the first time taking an intensive workshop on felting. It's been well over a month since I've been back and my brain is starting to process everything that I took in. I'm ready to dive in!

Where have I been? Why was Rick Steve's the first person to let me in on the secret and why are people not talking about this place? Ok, this could be due to the fact that it's called Ljubljana and this alone may cause some to panic, but once you know it's pronounced Loob-lee-AHnah (said quickly) then you can just let out a sigh of relief and get to experiencing the loveliness already.

I REALLY loved this place.

Preseren Square. This is the heart of the city that has a triple bridge spanning the river designed by Ljubljana's famous architect Joze Plecnik. He's like Barcelona's Gaudi and he built many a beautiful building, statue or bridge in town.

The city is very bike-friendly so we rented bikes on our second day and made our way around every nook and cranny. Here we're trying to take a picture of ourselves on our wheels but it seems as though we were mistaken for some famous couple as this man and his kid couldn't stop gawking. I don't know....maybe it's the hats, glasses and his n' hers REI rain slickers??

There were two spectacular churches from our whole trip and this was the first. This Serbian Orthodox Church was striking. It was painted inside from head to toe in bright blues and golds with a black and white checkered floor. There were no pews inside as worshippers stand during the service. We stayed for quite a while and noticed people lighting candles as prayers. Unlike a Catholic church that uses little tealights, these were long spindly candles that you propped up in water filled tubs with sand on the bottom. The effect was really beautiful.
This is us waiting, waiting, waiting for a 2 am train to Budapest. At the time we thought it was a great idea, giving us a very long and full day in Ljubljana but after we returned our bikes in the early evening and lots of things closed down in town (including the actual train station) we were left to either wait outside or in the walkways underneath the tracks. Here we are in the bowels of the station where I'm changing my mind.

Papaver Verthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03048033711089010970noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7810766706652477155.post-79369980130785076942011-05-13T17:06:00.000-07:002011-05-17T17:01:08.987-07:00Slovenia....Go for the Cream Cake!
This is Part 5 of my trip down memory lane where I've been posting photos of our trip to Eastern Europe 2 years ago. Today, we're in Bled, Slovenia. I don't think I ever gave much thought to where Slovenia was on a map. Which is a shame because maybe I would've gotten my butt there much sooner. This place was so quaint and lush and just so European.

Below is Lake Bled, a glacial lake in the Julian Alps which you can't see any of (Alps, that is) due to the bad weather. Chris still has not recovered from this to this day - we were going to rent a car and drive through them, but alas.....cloud cover. I personally liked the overall gloom and mistiness.
There is a romantic 15th century church in the middle of the lake where many weddings are held. We hired one of the special boats (called a pletna) that take you to the church. No motor, one guy, two oars. He had some rowing power!
I'm not a huge fan of these kinds of desserts so thinking I wouldn't really like it, I ordered a huge slab of chocolate cake and thought we'd share. Well, I was wrong. So very very wrong. It was a fun night, with some very talented designers, good music and good drinks. It was a bit of a quiet turnout due to it being Mother's Day, but shows like these are always fun. I met my fashion neighbors, played around with a new way to display my pieces and found out that my felted wrist cuffs and pods look fabulous with my friend Jennifer's designs.
You can find more here, here and here.
This next stop blew us out of the water. Well, actually, I had a big fear of falling INTO the water while visiting this National Park, partly because the waters were running pretty swift in some areas and partly because, like so much of Europe, no one here had ever heard of a good ol' handrail. You know....to protect you from slipping or going over a very, very large drop.

On our big drive to Zagreb to catch our train to Slovenia, we made a stop at Plitvice National Park. We had read that if we could, we should definitely try to visit and I'm so glad we did. This place made our jaws drop. It was like a Disneyland on steroids, without anything fake or mechanical and no creepy songs. It was like a lush stage set meticulously built for a prehistoric dinosaur movie. I could go on! But you get the point. Check out the pics of this forest with waterfalls, turquoise lakes and miles of plank walks.

From Korcula, Croatia, we headed out to Mostar, Bosnia Herzegovina....but on the way, we made an important stop. Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to visit Medjugorje. I know this is because of stories my aunt and uncle told me about when they visited this town in the 80's, back when it was in Yugoslavia. It's also to do with my Catholic upbringing, mainly from my Mexican side, that was filled with stories of apparitions, choir voices appearing out of nowhere, blood-crying statues, people spontaneously speaking in tongues, an unexplainable image imprinted onto fabric combined with possibly, and an unhealthy dose of the Twilight Zone since the age of 5. Needless to say, since a young lass, I've always been intrigued with religious influenced stories of the unexplainable. From an agnostic point of view, mind you.

If you've never heard of the place or are not into crazy vision-seeing, miracle stories, Medjugorje is a popular religious pilgrimage site due to reports of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to 6 locals (who happen to be brothers and sisters.) She's apparently only speaking to 3 of them now, but that doesn't deter 1 million people from visiting each year. Anyway, when I looked on a map and saw that Medjugorje was on the way to Mostar, we made a stop!
When we got to the top, there was a young man praying on his knees with a lot of fervor. Having a Catholic background, I felt it appropriate to say a little prayer and then I promptly sat to do some people watching. During our short visit, nothing much happened....ok, I'll admit, it would've been cool to see something go down, but instead we enjoyed walking through some beautiful fields and poking around the town a bit. There were crappy tourist shops every 2 feet selling every rosary known to man, so of course I bought a few for the Catholics that I know. This place was definitely what you would expect of a touristy-pilgrim destination (lots of tour buses, Americans in their white-white sneakers and fanny packs) but hey, I can now cross this place off my bucket list!

Here we are (below) in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina. If you look closely you'll see a guy jumping from the bridge (which is an Unesco Site). They're trained and do it for money. I've heard it's quite shallow down there. Eeeps!

Mostar was one of our favorite stops on the trip. A great balance of history, drama, beauty and walkability. It has a very tragic story, but it still remains a really beautiful place. This was the first city I've ever visited to have such a mix of cultures and faiths. I'd never been to a mosque before Mostar (there are so many minarets!), nor had I ever heard the call to prayer ( 5 times a day). It was so moving and gave me goose bumps every time.

The host of where we stayed told us a little bit about what it was like back then, how you had to travel around at night so you wouldn't get shot (her B&B was right near the front line) and how her and her family had to eventually flee to Germany. She came back to an empty shell, like the rest of the city, but she rebuilt her home and turned it into a lovely B&B.
